An ophthalmologist is a Medical Doctor (eye M.D.) who has spent at least twelve years after high school, including college, medical school, hospital internship and a medical and surgical eye residency to develop the proper skill and expertise to understand the entire body and the eye.
Anyone over the age of 40 should have their eyes checked by their eye M.D. to assess the overall health of the eyes. Also, anyone at any age with a medical disease that can affect the eye should see their eye M.D. to make sure that the disease is not affecting the eyes.
